Yes, before becoming involved as an executor, you can refuse to be an executor.  Commonly the family will arrange for the funeral or it may be pre-arranged. However, being involved in this does not preclude your deciding not to act further. However, deciding if you want to act as an executor is best done as soon as possible and clearly before an application for probate is made.  After that, resigning as an executor becomes much more difficult and costly, and there are even cases where the court has refused to let an executor resign.
